Official Microprose patches:

Patch for v1.0 to 1.2 xpatch12.zip 1.37mb

Patch for v1.2 to 1.4 xpatch14.zip

Patch 1.2:
* This update contains a new version of the DOS Extender, DOS4GW, to fix some compatibility problems seen with the earlier release.
– DOS4GW is not a MicroProse program and we were not aware of these compatibility problems until after UFO was published.

– If you had a problem running UFO, this update will fix that.

  • Corrupt tiles that caused multiple images to appear have been fixed.
  • removes several bugs from the floppy version of the game (1.2)
  • Action points have been limited to 80 to prevent the “wrap-around” problem seen with the original release.
  • Mission variety has been improved to allow access to all types of missions when playing.
  • Alien intelligence has been improved to allow a tougher game.
  • UFO encyclopedia has been expanded to include missing entries.
  • The corrupt game file, UBASE_07.MAP which caused problems when entering the Alien Bases has been replaced.
  • There is no PC Speaker support within UFO.
  • The Environment Space error has been fixed.

Patch 1.4:

  • removes the replenishing clip bug.
  • removes copy protection from the game
  • adds new sound files/ changes music/ effects (not always a good thing)

DOS4GW UPDATE

“DOS4GW” provided with the install of “UFO EU” is version 1.97

  • Removing or re-naming “DOS4GW” will force UFO to use “DOS4GW v2.01a”
    – the version that was BOUND by the developers

DOS4GW v2.01a is provided in my DosBox-Custom Collection

DOS4GW/PRO can “BIND” to GEOSCAPE/ TACTICAL
– may need to UNBIND v1.97 and then debug first

SAMPLE2.CAT AUDIO UPDATE:

– v1.0/ v1.2 have original screams for the alien deaths

– v1.4 uses new “moans” for the alien deaths … but also includes the original sounds

A hex edit can return the old sounds/ original Alien Screams.

[1] OPEN “SAMPLE2.CAT” with Hex Editor

[2] Scroll down to line #6 and make hex changes as follows;

OLD HEX:

|OFFSET(h)| |00 01 02 03 04 05|

DIFFICULTY BUG FIX:

In V1.4 the “IGLOB.DAT” cuts off the last four bytes when a saved game is loaded or at the end of a mission. The game would then be set to beginner, no matter what difficulty was previously set, never to return again.

The “GEOSCAPE.exe” can be modified (hex edit) to provide the difficulty fix

A single byte that can be adjusted to fix this problem:

[*] change the value from 60 (0x3C) to 64 (0x40).

Below are the offsets so you can fix them in your game.
